Nigel Laxton
Nigel is an independent contemporary artist who has recently moved from Perth to Sydney. He previously worked from a studio at Goolugatup Heathcote after graduating from Curtin University with a Masters’ degree in 2014.
Prior to that Nigel had a successful and innovative career as a Materials Scientist/Engineer and is named as an inventor on over a dozen international patents relating to aerospace and wave energy applications.
Nigel is inspired by contemporary, ambiguous artworks and these are the main foci of his work. He explores the materiality of various mediums, often with site related concepts, and works with both oil and acrylic paints, sand, and pigments.
His prints have been exhibited in both the Australian Print Triennial and the Fremantle Print Award, Australia's longest-running, most prestigious printmaking award.
Shortly after graduating he was commissioned to produce an artwork for the Luciano Benetton collection, in Italy, and received the Clyde and Co. art award.
He has since had three solo exhibitions, and one group exhibition, been a finalist in numerous local and interstate curated art awards, and had work displayed digitally at MoMA New York, USA, and at the Sydney Contemporary.
