Based in Redfern, NSW, Chance Purpose is an Australian artist who destroys to create. “In an effort to detach prejudice and my own ego from my work, I practice under a pseudonym that doubles as an approximation of my process; I destroy readymade objects like porcelain heirlooms, antique ceramics, and factory-made bisques by dropping them from height and then repairing their shattered remains to create entirely new objects of intention, clarity and purpose.

My work deals with themes of material value and physical damage, subjective transience, impermanence, and the temptation of reinvention. It addresses our collective desire for control amidst increasingly uncertain times, challenges established notions of what truly constitutes a whole or completed work of art, and ultimately invites viewers to consider their own delicate station in life.

My approach could be described as a radical evolution of the restorative Japanese art of Kintsugi, pushing Wabi-Sabi values to unnatural and deliberate extremes. Whereas traditional Kintsugi embraces accidental damage and natural wear as part of an object’s spiritual narrative, I seek to directly influence and create narratives where none exist; exploiting weaknesses and drawing attention to traumatic journeys.

With my practice I’m compelled to destroy fragile and often expensive objects of beauty and then exaggerate their reconstitution and means of “repair” to imbue them with a new identity and value. TL;DR: I break shit and make it better.”
